Best Camping Espresso Maker for Fine Grind Coffee

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Wacaco Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178189167{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2744″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F3h7XAey|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]In what is one of the coolest travel gadgets that we have seen this year, the Wacaco Nanopresso is capable of providing a perfect espresso shot anywhere in the world, no batteries required. This little gem operates off of a manual hand pump, newly updated from previous Minipresso model to provide a smoother and more effective pumping action.

Without a doubt, the real strength of the Nanopresso is its size and portability. It weighs in at .75 pounds and is a mere 6 inches long. This compact design makes the Nanopresso one of the only camping coffee makers on our list that is actually suitable for long distance backpacking trips.

There are a number of impressive add-ons that can be purchased for the Nanopresso, including a larger water tank and a protective carrying case. On its own, however, the Nanopresso is an affordable and effective travel espresso maker that has it where it counts. But one thing it can’t do so well is a standard black coffee. Adventurers who want the ability to make both coffee and espresso should check out the AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker, which we review further down the list.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Very compact and lightweight
  • Advanced hand-pump system is easy to operate and provides consistent flow
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Requires espresso-grind coffee powder; not suitable for ‘regular’ black coffee.
  • Only makes 1 cup at a time
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Camping Coffee Maker for Italian Style Coffee:

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Bialetti Express Moka Pot”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178189167{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2745″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2ZB5MOL|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]With a ~23-ounce capacity, the Moka Pot by Bialetti Express is one of the larger camping coffee makers on our list. While also available in 1, 3, 6, and 9 cup models, the 12 cup is the one that we were able to focus on for the sake of the review. It’s also the model that we recommend for family camping trips in which more than one person is going to be partaking in the coffee or expresso.

In itself, the Bialetti brand carries a certain reputation for quality aluminum construction, and that certainly seems to hold true for the Moka Pot. While the aluminum is not indestructible, it provides a sturdy, resilient defense against the hazards of any good camping trip. When clean and polished, the 21 Cup Moki Pot also adds a certain flair to the household stovetop.

Grind size is quite important when it comes to the Express Moka Pot. There is a real tendency for clogging to occur when too fine a grind is used. In addition, coarse grind coffee isn’t going to taste very good. The manufacturer recommends that you use Bialetti’s Moka Ground Coffee for best results, and from what we can tell that certainly does help. However, with a bit of practice and attention it is possible to achieve the perfect Moka-size grind with a household burr grinder.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Available in different sizes
  • High quality aluminum is stylish and durable
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Works best with Moka-grind coffee from Bialetti (sold separately)
  • Excessive heat can cause burning & bad tasting coffee … some practice is required
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Most Durable Coffee Maker for Camping

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Stanley French Press 48oz”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178265544{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2747″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F395Pj85|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]For over one hundred years, Stanley has been building a brand reputation for quality, vacuum sealed thermoses and steel bottles. In the last decade, we have seen their product line increase dramatically to include cookware, coolers, mugs, and more. To no one’s surprise, it has all turned out pretty great.

This 48-ounce vacuum sealed French press combines Stanley’s signature vacuum-seal construction with highly versatile coffee making capabilities. This isn’t one of those French presses that is going to clog the moment it encounters a slightly coarser grind. This means that it is capable of producing a range of different brews based on user preference.

There is no question that this is the most durable coffee maker on our list. While this might not be surprising for anyone who has had a Stanley thermos or mug before, it is in contrast to some of the more fickle, intricate construction of other portable espresso makers. When you pair this relative strength with a 48-ounce capacity and the vacuum-seal insulation, you have an affordable coffee maker that can keep everyone’s cups full of hot java for hours on end.

Based on user reviews, the mesh screen performs great for camping trips, but not quite as well as a countertop French Press. Some users have also experienced broken screens, but Stanley’s Lifetime Warranty more than covers issues like this.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Very durable French press that doubles as an insulated coffee pot
  • Can keep coffee piping hot for hours
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Internal mesh screen can let some grounds through
  • Quite large compared to other camping coffee makers on our list
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Camping Coffee Maker for Coffee Capsules

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”CHULUX Single Cup Coffee Maker”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178255287{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2748″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F3h8fM88|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]We’ll begin our review of the CHULUX coffee maker by saying that, technically speaking, it might not be the best option for backpackers and adventurers who are headed deep into the wild. The electric construction of the Chulux means that it requires a power outlet, and those can be hard to find in the backcountry. However, we decided to add it to our review because of how well it performs compact, single-cup coffee brewing. For RVs, campgrounds, and anyone else who is camping with access to power, the Chulux can make an excellent cup of coffee in more ways than one.

The last few years have seen K-Cup style coffee capsules explode in popularity, and for good reason. The pre-packaged, pre-portioned nature of coffee capsules makes them a natural choice for camping and RV traveling. The Chulux is capable of brewing both loose ground coffee and all forms of coffee capsules. Capsule brands like Nespresso, Lavazza, K-Cup, and more will work without issue, no matter what “generation” they are.

While the Chulux takes up very little space on the countertop, it is one of the heaviest models on our list (2.91 lbs). This makes it less portable for camping trips, but on the other hand, the electric operation has kind of already made that limitation.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Compatible with both ground coffee and pre-packaged coffee capsules
  • Metallic finish is available in multiple colors
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Heavier than other camping coffee makers
  • Requires an electric power source
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Bang-For-The-Buck Coffee Maker for Camping:

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Stansport Enamel Percolator Mugs `{`set`}`”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178255287{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2749″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F32or8Au|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]No matter what kind of gear a person is in to, everyone should know the joy of owning their own enamel camping cookware set, specifically this one by Stansport. Not only does this set come with a highly functional percolator, but also a set of 4 matching mugs. Featuring the classic speckled blue design and a rigid but lightweight enamel construction, this is a kit that will make you feel like you’re drinking coffee out on the open range. And who knows? Perhaps you are.

Aside from the nostalgic design, the biggest selling point here is the price. The Stansport kit comes in at less than half the cost of some of the other coffee makers that we looked at. When you consider the added value of the 4 mugs, you have what is probably the best all-around deal on the page. Now, you can’t expect café-quality espresso by any stretch of the imagination, but for good old camp coffee you probably aren’t going to do any better.

One of the elements that Stansport added to the set more recently is stainless steel rims. On the percolator, the stainless ring sits just beneath the lid, offering additional protection against dents and scratches. The mugs feature the same stainless rims, so we expect that they will last longer than previous incarnations of this classic set.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Included coffee mugs (4x) make this a great value
  • Classic design with reliable functionality
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Tin clasp on lid can rust over time; some users recommend removing it
  • No way to hang over a fire, like some older models
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Lightweight Coffee Maker for Backpacking

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178255287{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2750″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F30jBKy8|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]If you’ve spent any time around the coffee enthusiast then there is a good chance that you have heard the word AeroPress thrown around. That’s because this affordable little java gadget has been gaining popularity over the last few decades, particularly among attentive coffee drinkers who are constantly questing for a better cup of coffee.

So what’s the “deal” with the AeroPress? Supposedly, the high-quality flavors and subtle aromas in Aero-Pressed coffee are a result of a shorter but more immersive steep. This “total immersion” method is not only much faster than the 5 minutes required by pour-over, but it is also far more precise. The filtering process is effortless … another reason the AeroPress has had such staying power in the face of newer, younger competitors.

Unlike most French press-style coffee makers, the AeroPress is capable of making both American style coffee and espresso. Added access to espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, and the like are no doubt partially responsible for the model’s relative popularity.

To be honest, we don’t think that this coffee maker was designed specifically for camping or backpacking, but that’s certainly what it’s best for. The whole unit is only 6.4 ounces … which would be barely noticeable even on a long-distance trek. The downside to the AeroPress is a relative lack of durability, as the plastic construction simply leaves it more vulnerable to external damage.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Very lightweight and compact
  • Capable of brewing espresso-style coffee
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Not as durable as the Stansport or Stanley coffee makers
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Stainless Steel Coffee Maker for Camping & RVs

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Mueller French Press Coffee Maker”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178255287{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2751″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2Oz3kC6|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]No matter what kind of coffee you like to drink, there is a pretty good chance that you have had a cup of Joe from a Mueller French Press at one point or another. The combination of low price and sleek design have allowed this unassuming and yet functional gadget to make its way into the homes of millions of people worldwide.

We knew from the beginning that we would have at least one coffee maker from Mueller on our list. We chose the 32-ounce model because it is small enough for a campsite or RV. This is opposed to their 50-ounce model which is far more suitable for a kitchen countertop.

Either way, what you’re getting with Mueller is time-tested Austrian design. The utilization of three different filters provides added protection from that gunky dark sediment that sometimes forms at the bottom of the coffee cup.

While the insulation is not nearly that of the Stanley coffee maker (or any other vacuum sealed container, for that matter) the Mueller does feature a much thicker exterior wall than you might think. Beneath the stainless surface is an insulating layer, followed by a third layer of stainless. The result is a French Press that can keep coffee at an ideal hot temperature for even longer.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Triple layer stainless steel construction is durable & insulated
  • Also available in a 50-ounce model
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Disassembly is more complicated than with other coffee makers
  • A thorough cleaning is recommended before use
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Value Pick Coffee Maker for Camping:

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Farberware Stainless Steel Coffee Percolator”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″ css=”.vc_custom_1564178255287{margin-top: 40px !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”2752″ img_size=”full”][vc_btn title=”Check it on amazon” style=”gradient” gradient_color_1=”orange” gradient_color_2=”sandy-brown” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Famzn.to%2F2DPMzAq|||”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]The Faberware Percolator has earned a spot on our list largely because it is only about twenty bucks, but it still manages to provide the precision brewing capabilities that stovetop percolators are good for. The insulation certainly leaves something to be desired … but if you remove the coffee basket after brewing it is possible to keep the coffee warm without over-steeping.

The Faberware was clearly meant for stovetop brewing, but with the addition of a camping grate it is possible to use this in the wilderness. The only thing to be aware of is the plastic handle, which will most certainly melt  if it were exposed to open flame for extended periods of time. In addition, stainless steel does not handle direct heat as well as ceramic surfaces (like that of the Stansport set that we looked at earlier).

The simplistic construction is a big bonus, especially for anyone who has become frustrated with the complicated assembly of a French press. The whole percolator is only pieces, all of which can be simply ran through the dish washer without issue.

Although the Faberware percolator features a reusable stainless basket, some afficionados would still recommend using a paper filter in addition.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Pros” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]

  • Very affordable
  • Simple and reliable operation
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_custom_heading text=”Cons” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left”][vc_column_text]
  • Not as sturdy or insulated as other models
  • Not as campfire-safe as an enamel coffee maker
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

How to Choose a Camping Coffee Maker [Buyer’s Guide]

Next up, we’re going to share some of the criteria that we used to analyze these coffee makers, as well as a few things that we learned in the process of making this review. Even if none of the coffee makers on this list are the right fit for you, we hope that this information will prove helpful in your quest.

Good coffee, after all, is something always worth questing over.

Construction Material: Glass vs. Stainless Steel vs. Enamel Coating

When it comes to coffee, the surface material is everything. Yet camping coffee makers also need to be durable and lightweight, so concessions are often made.

Firstly, you never want to take a glass French press on a camping trip. That is simply a recipe for disaster.

Stainless steel is a popular option for coffee makers like the Moki Pot or the Mueller French Press. It is far more durable than glass, and offers much of the same anti-static quality as glass.

There is only one coffee maker on our list that utilizes an enamel coating. Not only is enamel durable and heat conductive, but it can stand up to the open flames of a campfire without lasting damage (though you are going to see some serious carbon buildup).

Capacity / Volume

With only a few exceptions, almost all coffee maker brands offer different sizes of their most classic models. One-cup coffee makers are ideal for long distance backpacking trips, but if you are using it for more than one person then you might be there a while.

Group camping is another story

Size, Weight, & Portability

Depending on what type of camping you’re planning on doing, not every coffee maker on our list is going to suit your needs. Car-campers and RV-ers are going to have a lot more room for larger coffee makers, for instance. They will also likely have access to standard power sources, allowing electric models to come into play.

Campers and backpackers on the other hand are going to need to be a little more conservative when it comes to weight and size. For many ultralight backpackers, powdered instant coffee is an unfortunate reality, but there are better options out there for the true connoisseur. For a look at one of the most lightweight and compact coffee makers out there, check out the Nanopresso that we reviewed at the beginning of this guide.

Are There Any Decent Camping Drip Coffee Makers?

The reason that there aren’t any drip coffee makers on our list is because, to a large extent, they all require power for use. For the purpose of this review we decided to focus on French press style coffee makers that use immersion as opposed to the drip method.

However, we did feature two different percolator models, one my Stansport and one by Faberware. While not technically drip coffee, you are actually getting better control of the brewing process. This is especially true if you can precisely control your heat source.

Both the Stansport and the Faberware percolators work great on propane camping stoves; the Faberware has the added ability to be placed directly over the fire if need be.

Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_tta_accordion][vc_tta_section title=”Q: What’s the difference between a percolator and a French press?” tab_id=”1594934479936-85e51231-e754″][vc_column_text]A: In essence, a percolator uses dripping condensation to steep the coffee grounds in very hot water. Both the length and intensity of the percolation will play a role in the final flavor.

A French press uses a series full, near-immediate immersion in order to get a faster and more complete extraction. In this case, the filter is pushed through the steeping liquid, straining out the spent grounds in the process.

There are a number of benefits and drawbacks to each method, and each method requires a little bit of practice to get the perfect results that you’re looking for.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q: Do any camping coffee makers have grinders?” tab_id=”1594934480198-40a4a709-7269″][vc_column_text]A: None of the camping coffee makers on our list have their own built-in grinders. Each is designed to work with pre-ground coffee of varying consistencies. Most campers and backpackers find that bring ground coffee is a good way to make things easier.

If you’re like us and simply must grind your beans fresh, there are a number of portable burr grinders available that aren’t going to take up too much more space.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Q: How do you make good coffee while traveling?” tab_id=”1594934580047-3316cd51-2353″][vc_column_text]A: Cheap coffee is just about everywhere, but good coffee can be hard to find, especially if you are on the road. The camping coffee makers featured here double as portable coffee makers ideal for people who are always traveling. If nothing else, brining your own coffee maker is a good way to take control of your morning cup instead of having to rely on whatever hotel lobby you’re passing through.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]
